More than a railway

The state government in South Tyrol would like a transport solution to connect Merano, Tirolo and Scena.

The participating tendering consortia (Leitner AG with PAC AG and Doppelmayr Italia GmbH with Pichler Projects GmbH (Stahlbau Pichler), Edilmac F.llo Maccabelli GmbH and Seiser Alm Bahn AG) have each proposed the construction of a funicular.

In the spirit of the mobility revolution, however, the plan is not just a simple track but rather an integrated mobility concept. The experts are currently still examining both proposals in various areas, such as the potential to incorporate the facilities into the existing fare system (South Tyrol pass). The routing and the optimal connection to all three regions are also being examined.

Admittedly, the idea of connecting these locations is not new. Walter Bernhard presented a similar project back in 2004. At that time, the government put the project on the back burner, in favour of a road tunnel. Over 15 years later, however, the signs now seem to be more positive for the funicular.
