Succesfully extended: The cooperation of UN-Habitat and Doppelmayr continues

UN-Habitat and ropeways builder DOPPELMAYR extended their cooperation in the spring of this year. The aim of this collaboration is the continuous expansion of sound knowledge, sharing of information and the provision of skills in the field of transport.

Everyone is talking about them – cities of the future – but UN-Habitat, the accommodation and housing programme of the United Nations, and the world market leader in the field of ropeways, DOPPELMAYR, are already one step ahead. Three years ago, they initiated a collaboration for gradual development of the city
of the future.

One major aim of this ambitious project is the integrated and sustainable use of transport systems. In particular, the expertise of the world market leader in the field of rope-propelled transport is indispensable here.

The fulfilment of global obligations, such as compliance with the climate agreement, can be achieved only through joint efforts between state and non-state bodies. Creative new approaches must therefore be taken, so that the necessary infrastructure for future demands can be generated today. This forward-looking action approach unites and serves as the basis for the newly formed partnership.

Together for sustainable mobility

Since 2016, DOPPELMAYR and UNHabitat have generated new ideas and developed information campaigns. One example of these is the World Urban Campaign, an initiative of UN-Habitat with a focus on urbanagendas at DOPPELMAYR as the top sponsor of urban ropeways.

Under hashtag #OnTheMove, the desire is to mobilise partners as well as residents. Here, DOPPELMAYR makes its years of expertise in the field of cabledrawn transport available to anyone who is interested in this issue. Town planners and decision-makers in particular are invited to sit around one table here and to face the challenge of future mobility.

The AoSUM (Academy of Sustainable Urban Mobility) was also put together specifically for this purpose, representing a further step towards sustainable mobility solutions (further information in SI Urban 2/2018, pages 56 – 57).

This is a one-week training event, which takes place once a year and meets with great interest from representatives of international city administrations, transport ministries and transport authorities.

Purpose, added value and especially sustainability of urban ropeways as an innovative transport solution will be presented at these events. Together, the participants develop sustainable solutions for urban transport challenges.

The cabins are designed so that even guests with reduced mobility can be transported
comfortably.

Achieving UN objectives together

Rapidly increasing urbanisation is creating changes in society and the environment. The population strain in the major cities of emerging and developing countries requires sustainable solutions. This is the only way that a green, worthwhile future will be possible in the cities of this world.

UN-Habitat focuses intensively on the consequences of urbanisation. The UN organisation develops concepts for the implementation of sustainable urbanisation and the transport sector plays a key role here. One thing is certain: the future of cities is closely bound up with a sustainable transport sector.

Ultimately, this is also highlighted by the global UN objectives (SDGs). Sustainable mobility solutions need to be intermodal, easy to integrate, environmentally friendly and energy saving – as well as accessible, safe and affordable for every user.

As the world market leader in ropeway construction, DOPPELMAYR recognises the current global challenges and is following the United Nations call for sustainability. The extension of the collaboration is a commitment to this.
