Talking about his work tool, he almost affectionately calls it „La ZAUGG”. He speaks of her as of the diva that for him she actually is. Highly sensitive, it expects a lot of skills and awareness from the shaper. It works with unparalleled perfection if it is challenged with high sensitivity and great know-how. “It is truly a tremendous challenge to work with her. She is so capable, facilitating perfection in pipe shaping.

But you need to have a sensitive bottom for every wave, for every inch of the pipe.” The Kitzsteinhorn half pipe is 150 meters (492 in) long and nearly seven meters (23 ft) tall. Dauntless jumps send boarders and freestylers through the air more than two meters (6’ 7”) high.

This requires absolute precision. “The verd – the uppermost 30 to 50 centimeters (12 – 20 inches) of the snow walls – is ground in a certain angle. The grade needs to be the same over the entire length. Otherwise, there would be danger for the users. If it is too deep, they could fall back into nothingness inside, if it is to flat, they could involuntarily leave the deck.

“It is fascinating to see what is possible using La ZAUGG. If you know her well and appreciate her sensitive reactions, there is nothing that can beat her at shaping an excellent pipe. We pipe shapers of the world all absolutely agree on that.”

A quick change system facilitates replacement of the snow blade on the pipe machines within 15 minutes.

Users must be able to rely on the entire pipe showing the regularity of a stairway where all steps are equally sized and shaped. Making a pipe is not the only art that not many truly master. Pipes also require daily maintenance. “Last winter, we have stored some snow for later use. This has worked really well for us this season. Covered with a fleece, about 75 percent of the snow survived, saving us a lot of effort in the foundation work.

It still takes about 10 days to make the pipe perfect. It then receives two to three hours of maintenance work every day”, the shaper says. In addition to the optimal handling standards, ZAUGG has put in some more goodies.

The pipes can be economically built and maintained using rotating grinding reels. Through its ejection chute, the grinding snow blower system deposits the snow exactly where it is needed, the stable light-weight design assures safe and sound operations to meet the highest demands whether winds are blowing or not. ah
