This systematisation gives rise to a classification that is strongly reminiscent of taxonomy in the biological sciences, as Frieder Kremer highlights in his book, \u201cInnovation Seilbahn\u201d (Innovation Cable Car). The following is an extract from his publication, with a few editorial amendments (TU Berlin [Berlin Institute of Technology] 2015: pp. 31-35).<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, every order, family and genus of cable car has its own specific properties in terms of transport capacity, gondola size, travel speed and wind susceptibility as well as number of supports and maximum distance between them \u2013 span length. Aerial cable systems represent linear, point-to-point connections over the shortest route between two stations \u2013 the starting station and the terminal station.<\/p>\n<p>The drive for the entire system is integrated into one of these stations. At least one cable is stretched between the stations, to which the individual vehicles \u2013 gondolas \u2013 are coupled. This cable is moved by the system drive. As it is therefore responsible for moving the gondolas, it is also referred to as the winding cable.<\/p>\n<p>The gondolas float along this prescribed route above the ground. To ensure a safe distance between the cable and the ground, the distance between the two stations can be bridged with the aid of supports.<\/p>\n<p>Funicular railways are likewise powered by means of a traction cable. In the case of aerial cable tramways, one gondola per direction generally travels on one or two supporting cables.<\/p>\n<p>Both of the vehicles travel between the stations in alternating operation, which is why boarding and alighting are possible only when the gondolas are stopped.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teaser text full\">\n<p>To guarantee effective operation, it is therefore sensible to use the largest possible vehicles with this system. The manufacturer\u2019s specification for capacity of the individual gondolas is currently between six and 200 people. The travel speed of the gondolas can be up to 12 m\/s.<\/p>\n<p>Together with the track length, these two parameters determine the total transport capacity, which cable car manufacturers specify at 500 to 2,000 people per hour and direction. Aerial tramways can straddle spans up to 3,000 metres. They are therefore suitable for short distances with a low to medium transport capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The Funifor system patented by DOPPELMAYR must be mentioned as a special form of aerial tramway.Inthiscase,theindividual vehicles are operated independently of one another, which allows greater flexibility in use of the track route. Moreover, the Funifor system stands out for its very high wind stability as a result of its wide travel path.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser text full\">\n<p>Circulating track cableways are among the group of continuous conveyors. In this system, the vehicles therefore move in the same direction at a constant speed. The gondolas here are coupled to a loop of one to three cables, of which at least one performs the function of winding cable.<\/p>\n<p>For easy boarding and alighting, the gondolas are automatically uncoupled from the winding cable when they enter the station and they are slowed to an appropriate speed. They are then subsequently recoupled and accelerated to the travel speed. With gondola sizes from four to 35 people, the transport capacity may be up to 5,000 passengers per hour.<\/p>\n<p>The Funitel system represents a special form of circulating track cableway; in this case, the gondolas are moved by a winding cable laid in a double loop. Thus, two parallel cable strands run through it in each direction, allowing extremely high wind stability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">.fusion-builder-row .fusion-layout-column.gradient-column-8 .fusion-column-wrapper:before {content: \"\";
