Just think of the flood of packaging from online business! Yet digitalisation can also be a lever to improve sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Christian <strong>Marheine<\/strong> from the University of St Gallen uses facts, figures and examples to demonstrate how both megatrends can be combined.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher in the Professor Andrea <strong>Back\u2019s<\/strong> department of \u201cDigital Strategy, Transformation and Innovation\u201d initially points to the importance of combining sustainability and digitalisation in science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2017, the volume of publications that address this converging interest has increased by 83 percent per year,\u201d Marheine says. Five applications are apparent here: Smart Factory, Smart Grid, Smart Building, Smart Agriculture and Smart Mobility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">.fusion-builder-row .fusion-layout-column.gradient-column-2 .fusion-column-wrapper:before {content: \"\"; In the DACH region, production and use of devices account for half of the digital CO2 footprint, computer centres for 30 percent and networks for\u00a0twenty. \u201cJust think of the increasing number of sensors, the server cooling and the power consumption of WLAN networks,\u201d the researcher continues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">.fusion-builder-row .fusion-layout-column.gradient-column-7 .fusion-column-wrapper:before {content: \"\"; These make use of the core technologies of the internet of things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and blockchain.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs such, for example, autonomous driving would mean that around 20 percent of the present volume of cars would suffice for the same transport capacity today. In turn, Industry 4.0 could save 50 percent\u00a0 of energy \u2013 through interconnection of the physical and the digital world,\u201d Marheine refers to various sources and studies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With Green IT, better use could be made of information and communication technologies \u2013 beyond the lifecycle. This is precisely in line with the idea of the circular economy: less material and less carbon, but more modular products for lower consumption and reuse of resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe switch from products to digital services holds ecological potential on the part of the provider,\u201d the researcher says. At best, digital technologies could contribute 41 percent of the German climate target CO2 emission savings by 2030, Marheine quotes the 2021 Bitkom study:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSpeed is critical here; the sooner we digitalise, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 22\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 22\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 23\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3>Applications in cities<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cNot only because politics is exerting pressure, sustainability is increasingly becoming a key target for (municipal) companies alongside revenue and profit in the digital transformation.<\/p>\n<p>The potentials of digitization lie in five application areas. &#8220;In the Smart Factory, productivity can be increased through the simulation of digital twins and automation,&#8221; emphasizes Marheine.<\/p>\n<p>This is interesting for the supply industry of urban cable cars,which can improve production quality, reduce lead times, and decrease resource usage.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic planners and operators of urban cable cars can also simulate traffic days and assess investment rojects in advance for their impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">.fusion-builder-row .fusion-layout-column.gradient-column-11 .fusion-column-wrapper:before {content: \"\";
