The Munich metropolitan area, home to approximately 1.5 million residents, is heavily influenced by commuter traffic. At the same time, there are deficiencies in tangential cross-connections within the public transport network. What factors speak for or against implementing an urban cable car?
Muttrah (Oman): Cable car project in the “Switzerland of the middle east”
In Muttrah, a historic port city near Oman‘s capital Muscat, two new cable car lines by BARTHOLET are currently under construction. The ambitious project aims to boost Oman‘s tourism sector and revitalize the region. For the Swiss manufacturer, this is the first installation carried out in collaboration with the operator Sabeen Investment.
Maninzales: Leitner expands the cable car network in the colombian city
Two existing systems successfully integrated into the transport network – third line put into operation at the end of September 2025: The ropeway network of the Colombian city of Manizales has now grown to almost five kilometers – thanks to the manufacturer LEITNER.
Zurich: Garaventa modernizes Rigiblick funicular
The Rigiblick funicular is not only a landmark of the Swiss metropolis of Zurich but also fully integrated into the public transport network of Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ). On their behalf, the cable car manufacturer GARAVENTA, part of the DOPPELMAYR Group, has comprehensively modernized the more than 120-year-old line. The focus was on new, barrier-free vehicles, modern technology, and greater comfort for passengers.

Tizi Ouzou: cable car by POMA – the second one
The urban cable car of the Algerian city of Tizi Ouzou has proven exemplary reliability of 98 percent since 2020 and carries more than 3.7 million passengers per year without serious incidents. Now, the line is being expanded with two additional sections: the French manufacturer POMA is currently constructing the “Tizi II” 10-seater gondola lift.
