Used Gondolas from Austria to Alaska

The Eaglecrest - Juneau ski resort in Alaska is investing in a new gondola lift, as reported by KTOO. Juneau purchased used cabins from Galstbergbahn (Austria) for this purpose. The new Eagle Creast Gondola should operate in 2025 - but will cost more than expected.

The planned gondola lift in Juneau will operate as a 15-passenger gondola lift, as was previously the case on Galstberg (Austria). It will transport 554 people per hour.

According to ski resort operator Dave Scanlan, however, the gondola lift will require more parts for its planned use at Eaglecrest and will therefore cost more than expected. Specifically, he needs additional supports in the middle station, pulleys and metres of rope for the planned route.

Additional costs of 1.86 million

The costs totalled around two million dollars, plus 1.1 million dollars for transport to Juneau. At a meeting of the parliamentary committee, Scanlan announced to the members of parliament that a further 1.86 million dollars would be required.

The cost of buying the cabins was about $2 million, plus $1.1 million for transport to Juneau. However, Scanlan is convinced that he will not need any more money from the city of Juneau.

City fears budget is too tight

The members of parliament are sceptical about the financing, with some members fearing that the costs could rise above the stated budget of 6.5 million. Regardless of this, the attitude towards the construction of the gondola lift is positive – the ski resort and the town hope that it will boost tourism on Douglas Island and better direct guests throughout the ski resort in future.
