Cable car for road workers

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) plans to install a temporary cable car between the north and south sides of the Msikaba Bridge Project on the N2 Wild Coast Road.

As reported by the South African portal Engineering News, the travel time for employees around the construction site will be drastically reduced. Currently, it is a three-hour car ride, but soon construction workers will be able to cross the gorge in just three to four minutes.

The cable car can accommodate up to six people or 500 kilograms of weight and will also transport materials between the banks. The focus, however, is on transporting leaders and specialists needed on both sides of the river.

The state road authority has contracted a Swiss ropeway company for the installation, which is expected to be completed by the end of July.

The installation is a good example of how broad the range of applications for (urban) ropeways can be.

The 1.65 billion rand Msikaba mega bridge will have a span of 580 meters and a height of 195 meters and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023.

It is part of the N2 Wild Coast road project, which involves upgrading 410 kilometers of road from East London to the Mtamvuna River on the border between the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
