Bolzano-Jenesien: Construction contract signed

Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG (STA) and the South Tyrolean ropeway manufacturer LEITNER have signed the contract for the construction of the Bolzano-Jenesien ropeway. The executive project will be drafted this spring, and construction is expected to begin in the second half of the year.

Another step toward a sustainable and fast connection between Bolzano and Jenesien has been taken: Südtiroler Transportstrukturen AG (STA) has commissioned the South Tyrolean ropeway company LEITNER to build the Jenesien ropeway.

LEITNER secured the contract for this major project as part of a consortium with the companies Unionbau and Elpo.

“With the signing of this contract, an important step has been taken toward a sustainable, fast, and convenient mobility solution between Bolzano and Jenesien. The realization of the new ropeway and the intermodal hub at the valley station is essential to offer locals and guests a strong alternative to private transport,” emphasized Provincial Councilor for Mobility Daniel Alfreider on the occasion of the contract signing.

Joachim Dejaco, Director General of STA, completed the signing with Giorgio Pilotti, Sales Manager at LEITNER, in late 2025. “We are now confident that the executive project will be finalized by the middle of next year and that construction can begin in the second half of the year,” explained Dejaco.

Financing

In August, the provincial government approved the updated technical specifications and the financing for the construction project. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately 39.7 million euros (31.5 million euros for the works and 8.2 million euros for administration).

Of this, 37.5 million euros will be provided for the 2026 fiscal year by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The remaining balance will be covered by funds from the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) and provincial resources.

About the project

The plan features a bicable aerial tramway from Bolzano (current valley station) to Jenesien (mountain station) with two cabins, each accommodating approximately 45 people. The intermediate station originally planned has been removed from the design.

The route in the upper section will be slightly shifted to improve accessibility. Additionally, the valley station building will be moved approximately four meters toward the road.

The maximum transport capacity will be around 350 people per hour. Bicycle parking is planned for both the valley and mountain stations, with an additional parking lot featuring 60 spaces at the valley station.
