Panama City: First urban cable car could begin operation in 2029

In Panama City, the bidding process is underway for the country’s first urban cable car. It is expected to help address traffic problems in the Panamá and San Miguelito districts. Here are the details of the project.

Panama City Metro recently announced a public forum as part of the environmental impact study for the country’s first cable car, which will connect the Panamá and San Miguelito districts, according to the media outlet La Estrella de Panamá.

During a Panama City council meeting, Metro representatives stated that construction is expected to take three years. As a result, the cable car is projected to begin operation in 2029.

The cable car project is part of a strategy to address the long-standing mobility crisis in Panamá and San Miguelito – both regions experiencing rapid population growth, increased demand for transportation, and urban expansion.

Details

The cable car will be 6.6 kilometers long, with six stations – two in the Panamá district and four in San Miguelito – and is expected to reach a travel speed of six meters per second.

It will connect to the Metro via Line 2 at the Cincuentenario station.

Project status

The international bidding process is currently underway, with the deadline for submitting proposals set for February 26, 2026.

The project has already completed a pre-qualification phase, after which two consortia were invited to submit their final bids.

Public Forum

The public consultation process has begun, with invitations sent to communities within the project’s area of influence as well as to local and municipal authorities in Panamá and San Miguelito.

Additionally, a public forum will take place on Saturday, February 21. The event is part of the citizen participation process required under environmental regulations before the study can be reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Environment.

San Miguelito is a densely populated area with a high proportion of residential and commercial zones.
