Inspired by Bolivia: Paraguayan politicians propose a cable car

In Fernando de la Mora (Paraguay), a city council candidate has proposed a cable car as a solution to the city’s traffic problems. According to the politician, the cable car is the most cost-effective option compared to the suburban train or Metrobus. How much could the project cost?

In the Paraguayan city of Fernando de la Mora, city council candidate Miguel Cáceres has proposed building a cable car as an urban transport system – modeled after the city of La Paz in Bolivia. This was reported by the media portal La Nación.

“Among the suburban train, Metrobus, or cable car, the cable car is the most cost-effective option in this order,” explained Cáceres.

He emphasized that the project would not incur any debt for the municipality, as it is planned as a private concession model. According to the politician, costs per kilometer are estimated at around 14 to 20 million dollars.

“We are talking about roughly six kilometers in the northern and southern zones. That comes to about 100 million dollars. The concession would have to run for twenty years,” he said.

Cáceres stressed that the project’s profitability depends on daily usage by residents. “If out of 100,000 inhabitants a thousand use the cable car daily, it will be profitable,” he assured.

He also noted that La Paz has pledged to provide free technical consultancy for the cable car project.

Fernando de la Mora is a city in Paraguay, known as a heavily populated suburb of Asunción, the country’s capital.
