Gondola extension in Montenegro

In the summer of 2023, one of the most spectacular cable cars in Europe started operating in the city of Kotor, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now, the cable car is to be extended to connect another city.

A direct connection from the sea to the mountains is a real rarity in Europe. In Montenegro, this rarity became a reality last year.

As previously reported, the 10-person cable car “GD10 Dub Kuk” starts in the port city of Kotor and, after a journey of 3.9 kilometers, reaches the village of Kuk on Mount Lovćen at an altitude of 1,348 meters above sea level.

Now, the cable car is set to be extended by another section. This is reported by SeeNews. The project, with a total length of 10,780 meters, would include the construction of an intermediate station in Ivanovo Korito in Lovćen and the final station in the former royal capital of Cetinje.

“The extension of this gondola will be a unique project, both because of its length and because it is a gondola that will connect two historically very important cities in the country – Cetinje and Kotor. It will be an outstanding tourist attraction.”

The next steps

As announced in a press release by the local government, the authorities of Cetinje will begin creating the technical documentation for the project, including a feasibility study and a cost-benefit analysis.

The Senate, led by Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic, is responsible for various tasks, including the adoption of Cetinje’s annual capital development program and submitting proposals to state and local authorities on issues related to the economic and cultural development of the city.

The technical centerpiece of the facility is the LEITNER DirectDrive.

In addition to its high reliability, energy savings of up to twelve percent compared to conventional drives, complete elimination of lubricants, and easy maintenance, it also impresses with significantly lower noise levels.

Complementing the efficient drive system is the frequency converter LeitDrive, whose perfect coordination with the motor ensures a high overall efficiency of 96 percent in all load ranges.
