Mexico City celebrates urban ropeway

The almost 10-kilometre-long Doppelmayr/Garaventa ropeway connects directly to the city's largest transport hub and thus serves as a central transport system. For Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Padro, however, the urban ropeway has much greater potential.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Padro describes the first line of the Cablebús: “For us, the ropeway is not only a mobility project, but also a social one. We want to offer the best public transport to the people of our city and we are starting where improvement is urgently needed.” The travel time for commuters on everyday routes is cut by half. In comfortable 10-seater cabins, they glide above traffic jams and arduous routes.

A section of Línea 1 between the stations Tlalpexco and Campos Revolución has already been in operation since March 2021. The first experiences are very positive. The new means of transport is well accepted. With the completion of the main axis, the connection to the underground and bus has now also been created and will thus make everyday life easier for many commuters. Not only the way to the workplace is made easier by the system, but the cable car also has an impact on the employment of the population in other ways. The Linea 1 will directly create 300 jobs.

Operation

The ropeway is operated by Mexico City’s transport authority, Servicio de Transportes Eléctricos (STE). In the first year of operation, Doppelmayr Mexico will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the installation. Subsequently, the trained team will transfer over to the city. Thomas Pichler, Managing Director of Doppelmayr Holding SE, explains:

“In Mexico City, we are establishing the central support services for our subsidiaries and representatives throughout Latin America within the Doppelmayr Group. Our customers in this market for urban mobility and tourism projects, which is very important for us, thus have their partner for consulting, project development, ropeway training, maintenance and service tasks in close proximity.”
