How do you connect the core city and the park city?

The question of connectivity has preoccupied Donauwörth (a large district town in Germany) for decades. Time and again, the idea of an urban cable car came up on the decision-makers' agenda. With the help of an international building exhibition, this system could now become reality.

While the city centre of Donauwörth lies at an altitude of 410 metres above sea level, the Parkstadt is even more than 500 metres above sea level – a considerable incline for a distance of only a few hundred metres.

The city of Donauwörth has been working on how to overcome this gradient for years. The focus is always on pedestrian and bicycle traffic, since the road connections are always given. However, the paths for non-motorised traffic are steep, not barrier-free and in poor condition. So why not revive the idea of a cable car?

As reported by Donau-Ries-Aktuell, city councillor Birgit Rößle suggested contacting the Munich Metropolitan Region. They are planning an International Building Exhibition (IBA) under the motto “Spaces of Mobility”.In order to be considered for the IBA, you have to have a few things to show for it. “We want to present experimental and new things at the IBA. This could include, for example, the idea of a cable car to connect two parts of the city.

The town of Donauwörth would then have to approach the IBA office with an application and apply. The staff at the IBA office will then provide support in further qualifying the projects, networking with partners and acquiring funding, among other things, explains Iris Beck. But it will still take a little time before that happens. “We are currently in the foundation phase in order to be able to start in 2022,” says geographer Iris Beck, contact person for the IBA.

Could this also be the start of the Donauwörth cable car?
