Immoos – Swiss evacuation system for Mexico City

The innovative single-person evacuation system from IMMOOS was recently instituted in Mexico City: self-propelled cableway device SS1 guarantees optimal access to the gondolas.

Mexico’s capital city relies on urban cable cars for public transport. Various gondola cableways open up the different neighbourhoods, offering safe and faster connections for commuters in particular.

However, when it comes to possible rescue in an emergency, the evacuation of urban cable cars is notoriously more challenging. The main problem is access to the gondolas, which is often not possible with traditional, two-person rescue teams, owing to the dense city population.

Rescuers therefore need to get to the cars on their own, via the track cable and without assistance from below. This makes the single-person evacuation system from IMMOOS – with self- propelled cableway device SS1 – the optimal solution for urban cable cars.

Sensitive to the emergency

In the future, Mexico City will also rely on the innovative evacuation system from the Swiss rescue specialist. Because the area has to live with a high risk of earthquakes, the authorities and rescuers are generally very aware of such emergency scenarios.

The evacuation drills on site, led by IMMOOS instructor Michael Germann, were accordingly positive. In an emergency, the local fire service is responsible for rescue.

Participants from “Bomberos de la Ciudad de México” were all very attentive and motivated at the briefing. Over 30 people attended the evacuation drill, and the fire service aims to train over 100 people in this aerial rescue method, which is new to them.

Responsibility for potential evacuation is therefore in the best hands with “Bomberos de la Ciudad de México”.

SS1 used in over 2,000 locations

Rescue specialist IMMOOS is pleased that its single-person evacuation system with self-propelled cableway device SS1 now ensures fast and safe evacuation in

the Mexican capital. A battery-powered driver means that running SS1, which is now used in over 2,000 locations worldwide, is no problem even on flat cable spans.

It can also run on slight gradients and the optional drive motor means that even a gradient up to 20° is possible. Just recently, with the new SS20 AWD, IMMOOS developed a new type of cableway device designed especially for applications with high loads and uphill travel. Photos: IMMOOS
