Is Duisburg to get an urban cable car?

Local public transport in Duisburg could be supplemented by a highlight, namely an urban cable car, as reported by 24RHEIN. Possible routes have already been examined.

There are two possible routes for the cable car: Line A starts at Duisburg Central Station and is to run for 5.3 kilometres to the newly planned 6-Seen-Wedau district.

Potential exists

Line B could run between Duisburger Dünen Süd over 2.6 kilometres to the planned new RheinOrt district. According to the city’s transport committee, Line A has more potential to be used as a means of public transport. The route could be worthwhile in terms of commuting volumes.

Seven stops planned

The route plans seven stops, including the stadium and the sports park, which would benefit from a cable car stop as a crowd-puller. The planned stops:

  • Duisburg main station
  • Dune North
  • Dune South
  • Stadium
  • Sports Park
  • Technology Quarter Wedau
  • 6-Lakes-Wedau

Cost-benefit analysis

This week, Stefan Christochowitz from GEBAG Flächenentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH commissioned PTV Transport Consult GmbH to carry out a cost-benefit analysis specifically for the “Duisburg Hauptbahnhof – 6-See-Wedau” line.

The aim of the analysis is to examine the overall economic benefits of such an investment project and thus the fundamental eligibility for public funding.
