Crisis-Proof tourist attraction

The tourism industry in particular has had a number of difficulties during the pandemic. In Singapore, it has been clearly demonstrated which provision is trusted even during the crisis.

Of the five local tourist attractions visited several times in recent weeks in Singapore, the Singapore Flyer, Singapore Cable Car and Flight Experience were able to attract a constant flow of customers (according to Today magazine), whereas the Trick Eye Museum and Madame Tussauds recorded lower visitor numbers by comparison.

All three winners from the crisis enable people to enjoy a city from above. The cable car is particularly special here, as it is intended not only as a tourist attraction but are also as a public transport system. Whereas only few trams or buses around the world are regarded as an attraction, the unique perspective from a cable car gondola ensures excitement.

This emotional connection with the transport system makes the cable car a facility that is used gladly, even in a time of crisis. In Singapore, despite strong visitor numbers, there is now an aim to rely increasingly on local passengers.

“The cable car should appeal to even more different demographic groups, such as the elderly, freelancers or housewives, and thus guarantee even more balanced use of capacity,” says Shirley Tee, Senior Manager at Nanyang Polytechnic School of Business Management. Right now, people are also always asking about the issue of safety. As a tried and tested transport system, the cable car is able to score strongly here.

Michael Chiam, tourism lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic: “As long as locals recognise that it is safe to venture outside by complying with all the safety precautions in place, confidence in all provisions will be gradually restored and a degree of normality will return.”
