Dominican Republic: Cable Car Renovation for 20 Million US Dollars

A popular tourist destination in Puerto Plata is set to receive a modernized facility. Extensive infrastructure improvements are planned, including technical upgrades and barrier-free access. How is the project being financed?

In the Dominican city of Puerto Plata, a comprehensive renovation of the cable car system will be carried out. This was announced by the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, and the Minister of Tourism, David Collado.

The cable car runs from the city to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres and is considered one of the region’s main tourist attractions.

The renovation is budgeted at more than 20 million US dollars. The funds come from the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC).

“The Puerto Plata cable car has been a symbol of Dominican tourism for five decades. Today, we are beginning the measures to ensure that it continues to set standards — with state-of-the-art technology, increased safety, and a first-class experience for our visitors,” Paliza was quoted as saying by the media outlet Listín Diario.

Puerto Plata

is a coastal city in northern Dominican Republic on the Atlantic coast.

What improvements will be made?

One of the key changes in the project is the modernization of the cabins, which will be able to handle higher demand and reduce waiting times.

Passenger capacity will increase from 18 to 50 people, and travel time will also be optimized, decreasing from eight to five minutes.

In addition to the technical upgrades, the project includes the reconstruction of the stations with barrier-free access.

The renovation of the cable car is expected to be completed within 18 months after the contract is awarded.
