Following the completion of the joint review of the contract documents, the contract for the Teleférico de Panamá and San Miguelito project has been signed. The contracting parties are Metro de Panamá, S.A. and a subsidiary of the Austrian company Doppelmayr.

The contract will now be submitted to Panama’s government audit authority, the Contraloría General de la República, for review and approval. This step is required before the project can enter its operational phases.

6.6-kilometre route and six stations

The cable car system will cover a route of approximately 6.6 kilometres and will have six stations. These will be located in Balboa, Cincuentenario, Samaria, Mano de Piedra, Valle de Urracá and Torrijos Carter.

The initial capacity is expected to be up to 2,800 passengers per hour per direction.

The infrastructure is to be integrated into the existing public transport network, in particular through a direct connection to Line 2 of the Panama Metro.

The project was awarded for approximately US$255 million and is intended to improve urban connectivity.

According to official information, construction of the cable car is expected to take around 30 months from the issuance of the construction permit.

Panamá and San Miguelito

The district of Panamá is located in the centre of the country and is the economic and administrative centre of Panama City.

San Miguelito directly borders Panamá and is primarily a densely populated suburb with a significant residential and commercial presence. Both districts are part of the Panama City metropolitan area.

With the signing of the contract, the project can now move forward. The aim is to improve urban mobility, accessibility and connections to public transport in San Miguelito and the surrounding areas.
