A traditional cable car in a new guise

Bayerische Rundfunk (Bavarian broadcasting, or “BR” for short) based in Munich is one of the best known broadcasters in the German-speaking region. It is the only broadcasting company in Germany to own a cable car – the cable car that runs up Grünten mountain, on which TEUFELBERGER-REDAELLI fitted new suspension cables in June.

The aerial tramway operated by Bayerische Rundfunk on Grünten mountain came into service in 1971. Over a total length of 2,597 metres, this aerial cableway conquers an altitude difference of 951 metres – with only a single, 27-metre-high support.

The cable car serves to carry supplies to Bayerische Rundfunk employees and as a means of transport to the transmitter. The system comprises two gondolas with space for eleven people and the top speed of the Grünten cable car is 18 km/h.

As part of a public tendering process in November 2020, TEUFELBERGER-REDAELLI was able to score points with its high-performance steel cables and it won the contract for this unique project.

After a joint inspection with all the people responsible from BR as well as the assisting trades on site, a detailed timetable for replacement and for installation of the suspension cable was adopted.

The cable was replaced in June 2021 by South Tyrolean company PARTH, as a subcontractor. The system is fully functional and available again with immediate effect and the gondolas are once again gliding smoothly, on the new suspension cables from Teufelberger-Redaelli.
