Herne: Green Light for the Cable Car
The council of the German city of Herne made an important decision shortly before the summer recess: by a large majority, city councillors gave the green light for the construction of an urban cable car.
In the future, the cable car is intended to connect the former General Blumenthal coal mine site to the transport network and help reduce congestion on the roads.
The decision was preceded by consultations in the council committees for planning and urban development, digital affairs, infrastructure and mobility, as well as the main and personnel committee. The district councils of Wanne and Eickel had also voted in favour of the plans beforehand.
“With this vote by the council, the fundamental decision to proceed with the cable car project has been made. This is a clear signal, particularly to the numerous companies that have already expressed interest in investing as part of ‘Blumenthal hoch3’, that this pioneering urban development project will continue as planned,” said Mayor of Herne Frank Dudda.

of the low-car mobility concept for the innovative “Blumenthal hoch3” district.
The next steps
Construction of the cable car, which will be the first in Germany to be directly integrated into an existing public transport system, is still scheduled to begin within this decade.
The key tasks now include:
- Europe-wide tendering process: Finding companies to construct the cable car.
- Securing funding: Applying for grants to help finance the project.
- Operational planning: Preparing for a smooth launch of operations.
The future cable car is a key component in the transformation of the former General Blumenthal coal mine site into a green and high-tech location, creating up to 4,000 new jobs both on the site and in the surrounding region.
“The cable car will provide transport access that is not only climate-friendly and barrier-free, but also economically attractive, as it is significantly more cost-effective compared with connecting the site to other transport systems. At the same time, the innovative mobility concept will ensure that the already heavily congested roads in the surrounding area will not face any additional strain,” said Frank Dudda, highlighting the advantages of the project.
