Taiwan: New cable car to suspension bridge

To further boost tourism in Nantou, Taiwan plans to build a cable car. It is intended to make visits to the already well-known suspension bridge hotspot more comfortable and offer a more engaging experience for visitors in the future.

The government of Nantou County in Taiwan is planning the construction of a 1.7-kilometer cable car near the “Zhushan Sky Ladder”  – a 136-meter-long suspension bridge above the rugged Taiji Gorge.

According to Taipei News, the system is expected to begin operations in 2031. The project aims to promote tourism in the region in an environmentally friendly way.

Highlights

The cable car will include four stops, taking visitors to spectacular natural sites: past a waterfall, through tea plantations, and into a bamboo forest.

The last one is set to be developed into a major attraction. Plans include a campsite, a treetop walkway, a giant swing, and a three-cable suspension bridge.

Costs and timeline

The total budget, including land acquisition, is estimated at around US $ 31.83 million. The county will finance the construction, while maintenance and operations are expected to be outsourced to a private operator later on.

The tender for project management is set to begin as early as next month, followed by the design and construction bidding process in October.

After that, negotiations on land purchases and the final planning for the operational handover will begin.
