Vietnam: Cable car will boost historical tourism
In Dien Bien, a city in northwestern Vietnam, work is beginning on a tourism project that includes the construction of a new cable car system. An official ceremony presenting the project details was recently held, according to the news portal “Vietnam+.”
The project is seen as an important step in the long-term development of tourism in the country’s northern mountain region.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang called on investors to use modern technologies, ensure a scientific and well-organized approach to construction, and prioritize worker safety.
One key requirement is that the cultures and traditions of Dien Bien’s 19 ethnic groups should be harmoniously integrated into the project. The goal is to create a destination that is modern while preserving its strong cultural identity.
Dien Bien
is located in a broad valley surrounded by high mountain ranges.

Project details
The project area covers a total of 35.35 hectares in the communes of Muong Phang and Pu Nhi and is divided as follows:
- Valley station: 15.51 hectares
- Mountain station: 5.89 hectares
- Cable car route: 9.71 hectares
- Infrastructure (transport): 4.24 hectares
Around 6.6 hectares of the site – nearly 19 percent – including roads, green buffer zones, public parks and water areas, will be handed over to local authorities for management after construction is completed.
The remaining areas will be used for tourism and commercial activities.
The cable car is intended to make the region’s scenic landscape and historical significance more accessible to visitors and is expected to transport around 15,000 passengers per day.
Construction and commissioning are scheduled to be completed within five years.

A place shaped by history
Dien Bien is historically significant: the French defeat there in 1954 marked the end of the First Indochina War and colonial rule in the region.
Today, infrastructure in the area is being expanded and tourism is growing rapidly. After welcoming around 1.4 million visitors in 2025, Dien Bien is expected to attract more than 1.6 million tourists in 2026.
Thanks to its location, many travelers now use Dien Bien as a stopover destination when traveling to or from Laos.
