Trieste: Cable car project moves ahead

In the Italian port city, an urban cable car is to help break up the flow of arrivals at the port.

In many places, urban cable cars serve the purpose of enhancing public transport and relieving road congestion. The Italian port city of Trieste is now jumping on the bandwagon: While the project has only been under discussion since the end of 2021 (see SI Urban 1/2022), it is now already being put out to bid.

Because Venice now prohibits more and more cruise ships from docking in the port, they are often forced to divert to Trieste, which is about 115 km away – causing an enormous increase in tourists in the city.

In order to transport them comfortably through the city, the city administration is planning an urban cable car from the harbour to the Karst, the mountainous landscape above Trieste – but not all residents like this.

Bids for the project, estimated at 62 million euros, can be submitted until February 6th.
