China: Cable car for a coastal site

A new cable car on Liugong Island in China is expected not only to further boost local visitor numbers, but also to inspire other regions across the country to invest in similar tourism infrastructure.

Since early May, the new cable car on Liugong Island in the Chinese coastal city of Weihai has been officially open to the public. The system changes the visitor experience at this popular tourist destination and offers a new perspective on the region.

According to the manufacturer POMA’s Reference Book, the new cable car has the following technical specifications:

Line length: 698 meters
Number of cabins: 26 (6-passenger cabins)
Transport capacity: 1,500 passengers per hour
Operating speed: 5 meters per second

A flagship project for China’s tourism sector

According to POMA, the cable car has received positive feedback from visitors.

The project is seen as an example of the ongoing development and modernization of tourism standards in China.

Liugong Island

Liugong Island is located just off the coast of the city of Weihai in Shandong Province and is a site of both historical and scenic significance. It is widely known in China as the birthplace of the country’s first modern navy and as a location associated with the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895).

Today, the island is a popular national forest park that combines historical landmarks, museums, and striking natural scenery.
