Guatemala: Cable Car from the Airport Under Discussion
Guatemala is currently discussing the construction of a cable car system that would connect La Aurora Airport with the historic city of Antigua Guatemala. According to the daily newspaper Prensa Libre, the project could create a new transport link between the country’s main international airport and one of its most popular tourist destinations.
Authorities are currently assessing whether the project is viable and worthwhile. Representatives of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI, BCIE in Spanish) have confirmed that the initiative is moving into the feasibility study phase.
The study will examine several key aspects, including:
- Passenger demand;
- Alternative transport solutions;
- Technical feasibility and engineering requirements;
- Preliminary assessments of environmental and social impacts;
- Cost estimates and potential financing models.
According to the BCIE, the consulting firm responsible for conducting the study has not yet been officially selected. Once a contract is signed, the assessment phase is expected to take approximately nine months.
The historic center of Antigua Guatemala
was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Funding Provided by German Development Bank
The new feasibility studies will be financed by the German development bank KfW. The bank is supporting the project as part of an international cooperation program aimed at promoting sustainable mobility.
What Benefits Would the Cable Car Bring?
The proposed system is intended to improve transport connections between La Aurora Airport and Antigua Guatemala while significantly reducing travel times and further boosting tourism.
In addition, the cable car would provide both local residents and international visitors with a more environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation option.
