Lisbon wants a new funicular
Following the fatal accident with 16 casualties, the Glória funicular in Portugal's capital, Lisbon, came to a standstill. Now a complete rebuild is planned - and according to media reports, the reopening date has already been set.

“We are planning a new system, not a reconstruction,” the FAZ quotes Rui Pedro Gaspar Lopo, president of the transport company Carris: “The future railway will be new, but the location remains historic.”
The new railway must be “robust and technically advanced,” demanded Gonçalo Reis, vice president of the city council. “We want a modern project,” Reis said, adding that it should nevertheless emphasize the “historic identity” of the old funicular.
An international tender for the new construction is planned for next year, with commissioning scheduled for 2029.
The cause of the tragedy on September 3, 2025, was a snapped cable: a carriage of the popular tourist attraction derailed on a curve and slammed into a building wall. The accident claimed 16 lives (five locals and eleven foreign nationals) and left around 20 people injured.
