Cable car for Malaysia: More than 60 containers arrived from Austria

On Penang Hill in Malaysia, a new eight-seater gondola lift is being built. The cable car components required for the project have arrived on the island after a journey of several weeks by land and sea. The system is expected to begin operations later this year, improving access to one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
Penang Hill, a popular tourist attraction on the island of Penang in northwestern Malaysia, is set to receive a new eight-seater gondola lift.

A funicular railway with two cars already operates to the summit. Now, Austrian cable car specialist Doppelmayr is building an additional modern aerial cableway.

More than 60 containers filled with cable car components have now arrived in Malaysia. They were loaded at the Doppelmayr plant in Wolfurt and transported to the nearby freight terminal. From there, they continued by rail to Hamburg and then by ship to Southeast Asia.

After approximately 38 days at sea, the shipments arrived on schedule at the port of Penang. Local logistics experts handled full customs clearance and ensured smooth onward transport to Penang Hill, near the island’s capital George Town.

The new cable car is expected to enter service in 2026 and improve access to one of the region’s best-known tourist destinations.

It will carry passengers from the valley station on the outskirts of George Town to the mountain station at an altitude of around 720 metres, located within the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognised protected area.
