Romania: Upgraded aerial tramway as a new landmark
In autumn 2025, the new aerial tramway on Tâmpa Mountain was officially put into operation in Brașov, Romania, replacing the previous ropeway from 1970 and providing improved access to the popular viewpoint overlooking the city.
The reopening coincided with the 55th anniversary of the Tâmpa aerial tramway’s original launch.
The new, single-cable aerial tramway follows the existing line layout. Where possible, the structural substance of the valley and mountain stations was preserved and the new installation was integrated.
The entire ropeway technology, including drive and control, has been updated to the current standard and ensures efficient and reliable operation.

The Tâmpa aerial tramway
reopened 55 years after its original launch.
More spacious cabins
The two red cabins from the manufacturer Carvatech, which belongs to the DOPPELMAYR Group, offer space for 25 people each. This has increased the transport capacity compared to the previous installation.
In addition to carrying passengers, the tramway is also planned to transport freight, for example, to supply the newly opened panorama restaurant at the summit.
The installation is barrier-free, and designed for night operation.

The Panoramic Restaurant on the mountain
reopened after more than 15 years.
Modernization costs
According to the local media outlet Liber Tatea, the total investment in the two tourist attractions – the aerial tramway and the panoramic restaurant – exceeds €20 million, of which over €12 million was allocated for the restaurant’s reconstruction and €8 million for the modernization of the aerial tramway.
The Tâmpa cable car in Brașov was officially inaugurated in the summer of 1970, on August 23, and operated continuously until October 2024, when it was closed for modernization works.
