Swiss cableways draw positive interim balance for summer

Swiss cable cars have had a strong start to the first half of the summer season in 2023. Businesses in Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland have particularly benefited.

The summer season of 2023 has been performing very well for Swiss cable car operators so far. Both last year’s results and those of the 5-year average have been exceeded, as confirmed by the data from the Summer Season Monitoring for July by Cable Cars Switzerland.

Overall, Swiss cable cars transported nine percent more guests from May to July than in the same period last year, as reported by the Swiss Cable Cars Association on Thursday based on a survey of 60 members from across the country. Revenue from passenger transport even increased by 14 percent.

Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland are performing exceptionally well.

“The current season is particularly successful in major destinations with well-known excursion mountains, which are particularly active in distant markets,” said Berno Stoffel, Director of Cable Cars Switzerland.

This is especially true for Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland, which were able to increase the number of first-time entries by 21 and 16 percent, respectively.

Conversely, things have been a bit more challenging for businesses that primarily focus on the domestic market and neighboring countries. For example, the number of transported guests in the Eastern Switzerland (-nine percent), Graubünden (-six percent), as well as the Vaud and Fribourg Alps (-two percent) regions decreased by single digits. “Overall, however, we are very satisfied,” concluded Stoffel.
