Urban Cable Car for Corsica’s Capital

An urban gondola lift called “Angelo” with three sections will enter into service in 2024, to form an intermodal system with the bus networks and shuttle boats. French ropeway manufacturer POMA will be responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the urban cable car.

Corsica is an island paradise in the Mediterranean, which attracts millions of tourists every summer.

Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte, is the historical hub and economic engine of the “Island of Beauty”. The city is experiencing significant population growth.

To support this growth dynamic and to address road congestion in the urban area, the local authority is expanding its mobility offer through a flagship project featuring a clean, silent and energy-efficient mode of transport: an urban gondola lift called “Angelo” with three sections, which will enter into service in 2024, to form an intermodal system with the bus networks and shuttle boats.

Starting from the redevelopment project in the Saint Joseph district on the seafront, the gondola lift will connect several major hubs in the city, served by multimodal stations that are perfectly integrated into their surroundings.

The three-kilometre connection will ultimately allow convenient travel for 1,500 people per hour and direction between the new hospital, college, sports infrastructure, commercial centre Mezzavia and new residential zones.

Just like the big cities, Ajaccio has chosen a cable transportation system to offer modern and sustainable urban mobility for its residents.

Construction, operation & service

On the strength of its vast experience operating and maintaining cable transportation systems, POMA has also been entrusted with the operation and maintenance of Ajaccio’s cable car for a period of 10 years.
