Urban cable car planned for Vienna

The cable car is considered a modern and sustainable means of public transport: an urban cable car is now also being planned for the city of Vienna, Austria, which will also run up the Kahlenberg mountain.

The idea of a city cable car suspended above Vienna has been around since 2012. The project, which was presented by Genial Tourismus- und Projektentwicklungsplan GmbH, is more extensive than before. Four stations are planned for the cable car: Heiligenstadt, Donauinsel Nord (Jedlsee), Strebersdorf and Kahlenberg.

The whole trip is to take 20 minutes. 115 cabins, each with room for ten people, are to travel at 21 km/h at a maximum height of 55 metres above the city.

A feasibility study for the project is still pending. Nevertheless, the NEOS are positive:

“In general, urban cable cars are becoming more popular internationally: they are fast and inexpensive to build, space-saving and highly efficient.”

Construction would be possible from 2025 onwards. With the implementation of the cable car project, the U4 is to be extended and thus a connection to public transport established. In addition, the costs for residents are to be kept low with cheap annual tickets.

It is still unclear to what extent the project can be realised. The City of Vienna is still sceptical because it still has “reservations about the content”. There are also a number of pending procedures that are expected to bring more information to light.

Mexico already has its third urban cable car, Singapore and Barcelona also have one each. Paris is also currently planning a cable car. However, it remains to be seen whether the urban cable car plan in Vienna will actually be implemented.
