Uruapan: New Cable Car for the City

Ropeway manufacturer Doppelmayr has successfully commissioned the Teleférico Uruapan in Mexico – a milestone in public infrastructure realized in close cooperation with the government of the State of Michoacán. The project improves accessibility, сonnectivity, and quality of life for thousands of residents in Uruapan.

With a public investment of MXN $3,200 million (ca. 157 million EUR), the Teleférico Uruapan is a strategic, fully state-funded project designed to provide a modern, efficient and affordable public transport system.

Uruapan, home to 357,000 residents and generating 8.5% of Michoacán’s GDP, now benefits from an integrated mobility solution that supports both the city’s social and economic development goals.

Fast, reliable Connections across the City

Spanning eight kilometers from east to west, the urban ropeway reduces travel times to just 27 minutes, cutting typical travel times by half compared to bus rides. Furthermore, it helps to reduce longstanding challenges related to road congestion and urban segregation.

The ropeway system features six strategically located stations connecting the city’s main economic, healthcare, and public service hubs:

  1. Hospital Regional (Regional Health Center)
  2. Libramiento Aeropuerto (Airport)
  3. Boulevard Industrial (Industrial area)
  4. Palacio Municipal (City Hall)
  5. Centro (City Centre)
  6. Parque Nacional (National Park)

By integrating healthcare facilities, public services, administrative areas, commercial zones, and major mobility corridors, the ropeway strengthens connections and improves the daily mobility for the city.

“The Teleférico Uruapan brings people closer together, shortens distances that once seemed impossible, and transforms the daily lives of thousands of families. Beyond infrastructure, this system represents new opportunities, time savings, and a better quality of life for those who use it every day”, said Konstantinos Panagiotou, CEO Doppelmayr Mexico.

Driving social and environmental Transformation

Beyond improving mobility, the Teleférico Uruapan is already contributing to the regeneration of public spaces and strengthening community life throughout the city.

Community Spaces: Each station incorporates public services such as an interactive museum, sports facilities, and municipal service areas, transforming stations into vibrant neighborhood hubs.

Strengthening Local Commerce: The ropeway boosts local economic activity through the development of a new market in the western part of the city, creating new opportunities for small businesses and local producers.

Safety and Sustainability: The implementation of Safe Pathways ensures protected pedestrian access to the stations, while the ropeway’s 100% electric drive eliminates local emissions, contributing to improved air quality and a healthier urban environment in Uruapan.
