Renovated Soviet-era cable car opens in Chiatura

After extensive renovation work, the Soviet-era cable car was officially opened today in the manganese mining town of Chiatura in western Georgia.

Locals and visitors to Chiatura now once again have the opportunity to travel safely and comfortably by the new environmentally friendly cable car.

In hilly Chiatura, the cable car is one of the most important means of transport. The cable car was built in the 1950s, but after such a long period of operation, it needed to be completely renovated. “The project envisages the reconstruction of cable cars and stations. The central station and four lines branching off from the said station will be repaired. The total length of the line is 3,428 metres,” reads the project description published by the Municipal Development Fund.

Just two weeks after the resumption of operations, 20,000 visitors were transported. “It was a challenge, a problem that we solved and built a new cable car that cost 55 million GEL (about 14.8 million euros),” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
