A cable car in Innsbruck?

After the feasibility study in 2022, the project of an urban ropeway in Innsbruck will be further realized. The population is now being asked about this on the basis of a survey.

In 2022, a feasibility study showed that an urban cable car could connect Innsbruck with Igls and Lans in the low mountain range. Now it has been decided to realize this idea one step further with a survey. Until the end of May, the population will be asked for their opinion.

The idea of the project

The cable car in Innsbruck would be planned to run from Leipziger Platz or Innsbruck’s main train station via Olympiaworld near Innsbruck-Mitte and via Igls/Lans to the bottom station of the Patscherkofel cable car.

It would then take around 18 minutes from the main station to the valley station of the Patscherkofel lift and around five minutes from the Sillpark via the main station to the Olympiaworld.

City Cable Car

2022, the feasibility study also showed the options that would be possible for the construction of a cable car directly from the city. Accordingly, one possibility would be the concept of City Cable Cars. In this case, the cable car floats in fixed “tracks” above the street.

This would make it possible to negotiate tight turns and curves without any problems. This concept would only be implemented within the city area – outside the city, the cable car could then be guided regularly via lift supports.

Survey of public opinion

By the end of May, the state plans to conduct a survey of residents and ask them for their opinion on the cable car project. The survey will be conducted by Graz University of Technology and the results will be used to create a model to determine the passenger potential.
