Hope for Georgetown!?

The District of Columbia has allocated $10 million to acquire a half-acre plot of land near the Exorcist Steps, reports the Washington Business Journal. A cable car station could be built on top of it.

It is currently home to a closed gas station, but it could be an excellent location for the eastern terminus of a gondola carrying passengers between Rosslyn and Georgetown, writes Alex Koma.

But after a brief flurry, the idea had seemingly fizzled out. Now it is getting a new lease of life with the purchase of land.

What happened?

Despite the rejection of the cable car at the time, proponents of the gondola have continued to push the project.

Former Congressman Tom Davis, Wizards/Caps owner Ted Leonsis, and JBG Smith CEO Matt Kelly wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post urging local decision-makers to find a way to run cable cars across the Potomac.

The site could also be a charging station for electric cars, Joe Sternlieb, CEO of the Georgetown BID, told Koma, or perhaps the site of a Georgetown Metro station at some point in the future.
