Float away on holiday

The new tri-cable car carries visitors on the shortest route to the popular holiday island of Cat Ba. Like the previous 3S line to the islands of Hon Thom and Phu Quoc, this installation has also made it into the Guinness Book of Records.

Cat Ba is the largest island in Lan Ha Bay in the north of Vietnam. It is a popular destination and lies just 20 kilometres east of Hai Phong, Vietnam’s third largest city, which – with its port – plays a key role in the economy. With the new “Cat Hai – Phu Long cable car route” a fast connection has been created to the island of Cat Ba.

During the crossing on the new cable car, you can enjoy the view of the sea, natural limestone mountains and a fishing village. Furthermore, the journey time is significantly shorter; in the past, a ferry crossing would have been a 20-minute trip. Another alternative was the considerably more expensive speedboat. The cable car link from DOPPELMAYR/GARAVENTA now offers a fast and reasonably priced option for all guests coming to the Vietnamese island.

This is a part of the tourism development in the region and contributes substantially to the aim of reducing emissions on the island. With the faster connection, it is hoped that other tourism projects can be implemented to further boost the economy on the island.

For construction of the new connection, Sun Group once again relied on DOPPELMAYR/GARAVENTA – together, they have built a cable car of superlatives.

The cable car is the latest project to emerge from the longstanding partnership of DOPPELMAYR/GARAVENTA and Sun Group.

Comfortable and efficient

With its maximum transport capacity of 5,500 people per hour and direction, the tri-cable car to Cat Ba demonstrates is performance in use as a mobility solution. This plays a key role especially on peak days. Previously, the limited capacity of the ferry and speedboat often resulted in prolonged waiting times but these are now a thing of the past, thanks to the DOPPELMAYR/GARAVENTA cable car.

Both the spacious gondolas – with capacity for 30 people – and the accessibility ensure a comfortable journey for all guests, even with a pushchair, wheelchair or bicycle. During the journey, the running roller generator integrated into the gondola drive generates power, which is supplied to various gondola functions such as the air conditioning and the lighting.

The route, which is almost four kilometres long, runs over two supports. At a height of 214.8 metres, Sun Group was able to secure its next world record, which has been officially confirmed by Guinness World Records. From 2020, the tallest cable car support is therefore officially at Cat Hai.

The longest tri-cable car in the world connects the islands of Hon Thom and Phu Quoc, the tri-cable car with the greatest altitude difference runs to Vietnam’s highest peak – Fansipan – and the world’s largest cable car gondola can be found in Halong Bay. Anyone who visits Ba Na Hills will also get to the destination by one DOPPELMAYR/GARAVENTA cable car or another.
