Urban cable cars in New Zealand?

Together with transport planner Abley, DOPPELMAYR New Zealand carried out strategic analyses for cable cars. Out of 20 possible cable car options, DOPPELMAYR has identified ten lines that are the preferred options in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.

Auckland

Airport – Botany:

  • 4 stations: Airport, Puhunui, Manukau and Botany
  • Journey time: 41 minutes (bus 55 minutes, car 53 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 2,000 passengers per hour and direction

Airport – Onehunga:

  • 4 stations: Airport, Mangere, Mangere Bridge and Onehunga
  • Journey time: 26 minutes (bus 44 minutes, car 33 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 3,000 passengers per hour and direction

Te Atatū – Northwestern Busway – Henderson

  • 4 stations: Te Atatū, Te Atatū South, Northern Busway and Henderson
  • Journey time: 10 minutes (bus 35 minutes, car 16 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 1,000 passengers per hour and direction

Wellington

Airport – Central Business District (CBD)

  • 4 stations: Airport, Mt Victoria, CBD and Pipitea
  • Journey time: 22 minutes (bus 36 minutes, car 36 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 2,000 passengers per hour and direction

Island Bay – Central Business District (CBD)

  • 5 stations: Island Bay, Newtown, Hospital, Queens Wharf and Pipitea
  • Journey time: 20 minutes (bus 42 minutes, car 24 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 3,000 passengers per hour and direction

Karori – Central Business District (CBD)

  • 3 stations: Karori West, Karori East and Pipitea
  • Journey time: 8 minutes (bus 33 minutes, car 20 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 2,000 passengers per hour and direction

Wainuiomata – Hutt Valley (via Waterloo Rail)

  • 4 stations: Wainuiomata, Waterloo, Hutt City and Melling
  • Journey time: 18 minutes (bus 33 minutes, car 20 minutes)
  • Transport capacity: 1,000 people per hour and direction

Christchurch

Airport – CBD

  • 3 stations: Airport, University of Canterbury and City Centre
  • Journey time: 25 minutes (bus 37 minutes, car 30 minutes)

Belfast – CBD

  • 5 stations: Belfast, Northlands, Papanui, CBD and Bus Interchange

Queenstown
